There Will Be Blood

You might remember this movie from receiving eight nominations at the 80th Academy Awards and garnering severe critical praise. So, is it really all that good? In a word: yes. But it’s certainly not perfect.

The Story
The story revolves around a lowly prospector named Daniel Plainview who accidently discovers oil during one of his excavations and makes it big. After the untimely demise of one of his co-workers following an unfortunate event, he adopts his child and in turn creates a family business. The movie then focuses on his obsession to take over every major landmass filled with oil, as Daniel slowly dissolves into a money-grubbing avaricious monster.

The Acting
Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview in the film, and as you can expect from his shiny new Oscar, he portrays the role brilliantly. Day-Lewis is probably widely known for being an extreme method actor, and sometimes it can be a little intimidating, but with good cause. He is exceptional at instantly switching back and forth between emotions, as in many of the scenes you’ll see Daniel Plainview transform from a sophisticated politician to a raving lunatic at a moment’s notice. You can immediately tell that Day-Lewis constructs the character into his own personality and therefore explodes into a beautiful burst of raw emotion. Very well done.

You’ll remember Paul Dano from the unexpectedly successful film: Little Miss Sunshine. He portrays Paul and Eli Sunday, the twin brothers from the Sunday ranch. Now, while his acting is outstanding, the casting for him to play two totally different people was kind of awkward. Originally they had Kel O'Neill to play Eli Sunday, but he dropped out because he was allegedly intimidated by Day-Lewis’ method acting. Thus, Paul Dano scored the role of Eli as well as Paul Sunday. This fact was questionable and confusing; leading several people to think that Eli/Paul suffered from some kind of spilt-personality disorder, but this was never the intention. It’s a good thing that Paul’s character barely shows up in the movie or it would have been a lot worse. In light of this, Dano’s portrayals of both roles are excellent.

The only other main actor is this film is pretty much Dillon Freasier, the boy who plays Daniel Plainview’s adopted son: H.W. Due to some unmentionable circumstances, he doesn’t have much speaking lines in the film. Seeing as this is his first time acting in a feature film, he does well, but sometimes he can be pretty awkward.

The Good
- Daniel Day-Lewis without question is the best thing about this movie. I’m certain that if they had casted the role to someone else, it wouldn’t have been nearly as good.
- The character development and the screenplay are executed nicely, and it contains various moments where the audience will jump out of their seat when in conflict with some of Daniel’s radical ideals.

The Bad
- The first fifteen minutes or so is completely without dialogue, which in retrospect isn’t bad when faced with an almost three hour movie, but after the ten-minute mark you’re kind of wondering where exactly the movie is going.
- The ambiguous casting between Eli and Paul Sunday is strange and confusing.
- There are times when the movie can drag on, but only a tiny bit.

Reservation Road

From the acclaimed director: Terry George, who wrote Hotel Rwanda, presents to you now another tragic tale.

The Story
Reservation Road follows the lives of two different families whom are both connected to a tragic car accident when Dwight Arno accidently hits Ethan Learner’s son after coming back from a Red Sox game, then in a panic proceeds to drive away. The perspective constantly changes between each of the families and how they're dealing with the misfortune.

This film plays a lot like a more compact version of Crash or Babel. We’re brought up to sympathize with each side of the story, and experience the irony as both families actually get woven into each other’s stories unknowingly. However, as the film’s running time is only just over an hour-and-a-half, it cuts the character development by quite a bit.

The Acting
With an all-star cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, Mark Ruffalo, and Mira Sorvino; you can expect the acting to be good. Most notability the performance of Joaquin Phoenix as the character, Ethan Learner, is truly awe-inspiring. Nobody overacts or pushes their character into an awkward medium which is good.

The Good
- A heartbreaking story that will captivate viewers.
- Excellent acting.

The Bad
- Too short. Not enough development.
